Each year, in late winter and early spring, we offer an AARP Tax-Aide program that helps tribal families file their taxes correctly. In 2017, during the 2016 tax year, 425 community members filed federal and state income taxes with our team. In 2016, during the 2015 tax year, 314 community members completed federal returns, with 257 (nearly 82%) receiving refunds. The average refund was $1,562. For the 57 community members who owed money on their returns, the average amount owed was $645.
Prior to 2013, WSCAT provided tax filing assistance to both the Warm Springs and Madras communities. Since then, we have focused primarily on serving the Warm Springs Reservation community. Over the last eight years, WSCAT has assisted over 2,700 people in filing their income taxes, with over 80% receiving refunds:
|Tax Year||Population served||Federal Returns||State Returns||Total Federal Refunds||Average Refund|
|2011||Warm Springs||183||180||$237,874||$ 1,525|
WSCAT will begin its free Tax-Aide Program for the 2017 tax year on Tuesday, February 6, 2018. Service will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 9 am and 5 pm, from February 6 through Thursday, April 12. We will also provide filing assistance on Monday April 16, the deadline for the 2017 tax year. All tax preparation services are by appointment only; due to high demand we cannot serve walk-in customers.
Beginning on January 8, 2018, tribal and community members interested in making an appointment to file their taxes can call the WSCAT office at 541-553-3148. Time slots are allocated on a first-call, first served basis.
